Now you will feel no rain,
for each of you will be
shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
for each of you will be
warmth to the other.
Now there is no more loneliness,
for each of you will be
companion to the other.
Now you are two bodies,
but there is only one
life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place,
to enter into the days
of your togetherness.
And may your days
be good and long
upon the earth.

-The Apache Wedding Blessing

Marriage is a vital social institution, the exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. Because it fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition. It is undoubtedly for these concrete reasons, as well as for its intimately personal significance, that civil marriage has long been termed a ‘civil right.’ Without the right to choose to marry, one is excluded from the full range of human experience.  -Massachusetts Civil Marriage Act 2003

The sky cleared and these words drifted out over us and our families and our friends.  From where we were standing the air felt electric. We laughed and cried, people hooted and cheered. We felt proud to read our own words in front of such dear people. The wind was spot-on San Francisco. In the end we were pronounced 'buds forever, partners in life'.

And off we went.
